IXS Enterprise – NASA’s Star Trek-style space ship

The Washington Post reported today about NASA’s design for a faster-than-light space craft. While this is all theoretical, it’s really exciting to see that this could potentially happen is our lifetime. “NASA engineer and physicist Harold White announced a few years ago that he was working on a potentially groundbreaking idea that could allow space travel faster than the speed of light. Yes, like in “Star Trek.” And now, to boldly go where no designer has gone before, Mark Rademaker — who is collaborating with White — has created a CGI design concept for the “warp ship.” They’re calling it the IXS Enterprise. “We wanted to have a decent image of a theory conforming Warp ship to motivate young people to pursue a STEM career,” Rademaker said in an e-mail interview. “It does have some Sci-Fi features that might never transfer to a possible final design, unless we really want to.” A warp ship such as the IXS Enterprise could allow travel to interstellar space in a matter of weeks rather than, say, centuries. And the science behind why it might be possible is truly...
How Apps Helped Me Lose 67 Pounds

How Apps Helped Me Lose 67 Pounds

What does a burrito-a-day and constant couch time playing XBOX get you? For me it was the ability to be out of breath after one flight of stairs and constantly feeling tired. And, don’t forget the need to buy larger pants due to my ever-expanding waist. I was 237 pounds and wearing a (snugly-fitting) size 38 waist when I decided that I needed to do something… but what? I tried to do the gym thing, but never could make that work. So I turned to the one thing that I knew very well… technology! First of all, I’m a data person, so I decided to login to the app store and find something to help keep track of what I eat. I used the app Daily Burn Calorie counter and Barcode scanner to start. How bad could those daily burritos be? You would be shocked how many calories are in seeming healthy items. The burrito shell alone (whole wheat) was 350 calories…not to menton the cheese… Yikes! I decided to keep track of everything I ate. That helped form better eating habits. I found foods that were good for me and delicious, too. (My trick for when I’m hungry… cereal!) Before I knew it, I was losing weight! After a while, I switched to the app MyFitnessPal to add a social element to calorie tracking. About six months into this “diet” process, I deiced to add exercise to the mix. A friend highly recommended P90X. So I gave it a shot. After three weeks, I quit. I couldn’t do the entire workout. It was discouraging. The people on the video...
Lost Coast

Lost Coast

Dear Top Gear (UK), If you see this, please consider driving The Lost Coast. It’s one of the most amazing places I’ve ever driven through. Winding roads that run along the shoreline and through the hills only to end up on a Redwood forest. Cheers, Rodney (I need another California road trip soon. )...
